Catcher Saul Garza Earns Academic Honor
Garza holds a 3.55 gpa in kinesiology, and he was voted in 2019 to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.
BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU junior catcher Saul Garza was named Thursday to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District First Team.
The 2020 Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Garza was voted to the Academic All-District squad in District 6, which includes the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic All-America® honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
Garza, a product of Edinburg, Texas, holds a 3.55 gpa in kinesiology, and he was voted in 2019 to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.
Garza batted .303 (44-for-145) in 2019 with 10 doubles, five homers, 27 RBI and 20 runs. He was voted the Co-Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional after hitting .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, six RBI and three runs. Garza batted .425 (17-for-40) in LSU’s 10 postseason games in 2019 with six doubles, seven RBI and five runs. He raised his batting average from .188 on April 23 to .303 at the end of the season, batting .395 (32-for-81) from April 23 through the end of the season with seven doubles, four homers, 15 RBI and 13 runs.
In the Tigers’ shortened 2020 season, Garza led the squad in home runs with three, and he was tied for the team lead in RBI with 12.
