Beach Volleyball Is BASF Team of the Month for February
Baton Rouge, La. – The No. 1 LSU beach volleyball squad has been named the BASF Team of the Month for the month of February.
The Tigers have won eight of their first 10 contests including two triumphs over the previous No. 1 ranked team, UCLA. LSU has won titles at both tournaments they have played this season winning the Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on February 23 and the Tiger Beach Challenge on March 1.
The Tigers headed to Hawaii to open the 2020 season at the Duke Kahanamoku Classic in late February. They knocked off No. 19 Stanford before dropping contests to No. 1 UCLA and No. 5 Hawaii. LSU came back the following day and won the title out of the losers bracket avenging their two losses from the day prior. In the semifinals against Hawaii, LSU won by a final tally of 4-1 winning four out of the five duo matches. The Tigers rallied and picked up a gritty 3-2 win over the No. 1 UCLA Bruins as Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope and Toni Rodriguez battled back from an 11-8 deficit and got to 15 to clinch LSU’s first-ever victory against UCLA.
LSU hosted four schools at LSU Beach Volleyball Stadium for the Tiger Beach Challenge and won 23 of their 25 duo matches. It was another showdown with No. 1 UCLA on Saturday night (Feb. 29), and the Tigers brought their A-game. In front of 2,407 fans, LSU prevailed against the Bruins by a final tally of 3-2 for head coach Russell Brock‘s 90th victory.
Claire Coppolla and Kristen Nuss, LSU’s top pair, has a record of 8-2 this season. The duo of Kelli Agnew and Taryn Kloth are a perfect 9-0 on court four matches this season. The two wins against then-ranked No. 1 UCLA moved LSU into the No. 1 spot in both the AVCA and DiG Polls for the first time in the program’s seven-year history.
