Grey, O’Donoghue, and Gunnarsson Earn SEC Weekly Honors

Baton Rouge, La. Rayvon Grey, Abby O’Donoghue, and Lisa Gunnarsson, three members of the LSU track and field team, were all recognized as SEC Athletes of the Week by the conference office on Wednesday.

Grey (Men’s Field Athlete of the Week), O’Donoghue (Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week), and Gunnarsson (Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week) all registered NCAA bests during LSU’s first week of competition.

Grey, the 2019 NCAA indoor long jump champion, started his senior season off with a NCAA and world-best long jump of 26′ 4.50″ (8.04 meters) to take the title at LSU’s Purple Tiger Invitational on Jan. 10.

O’Donoghue and Gunnarsson split the SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor with their stellar showings in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. For O’Donoghue it was a personal-best clearance of 6′ 0.50″ (1.84 meters) that gave her the NCAA lead. The mark of 6′ 0.50″ moved her to No. 5 on the LSU indoor list as she passed her mom and former LSU jumper, Kelli O’Donoghue. Gunnarsson cleared a height of 14′ 7.25″ (4.45 meters) in her first action as a junior to claim a win and the NCAA lead.

The nationally ranked LSU track and field program (men No. 2, women No. 16) will compete next at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Texas, on Jan. 18. Gunnarsson and fellow pole vaulter Cameron Reed will compete at the Pole Vault Summit this weekend in Reno, Nevada.
