Women’s Golf In the Lead At Magnolia Invitational

WEST POINT, Miss. – The LSU women’s golf team is picking up where it left off last Sunday in Virginia and currently holds the lead at the Magnolia Invitational at 1-over 289. Four players are sitting in the Top 25 with Ingrid Lindblad and Kiana Oshiro leading the squad in a tie for second at 1-under 71.

“We are now three-for-three in being in the final group heading into the last day,” said second-year head coach Garrett Runion. “It was another good start to the tournament but it didn’t start off that way. It was cooler with overcast skies and no wind actually making it ideal to make some birdies. We only made five birdies as a team on the front nine. I told the team we needed to play the back nine a lot like the football team played the second half in last night’s game.”

Lindblad, a freshman, shot her fourth round of the season at par or under. She was 2-under through the first nine holes, and 1-over on the back nine to finish the round. Oshiro, a junior, shot even on the front and 1-under on the back to tie Lindblad, her third round of par or under of the season.

Sophomore Alden Wallace is tied for sixth place, shooting par 72. She posted three birdies on the back nine to move to even by Hole 16. Freshman Latanna Stone provided the fourth team score at 3-over 75, while junior Kendall Griffin shot a 7-over 79.

“Conditions worsened as it seemed to get colder and started raining,” continued Runion. “Kiana started us off making birdie on 10 followed by Latanna holing out for eagle from 99 yards with a wedge and Ingrid adding another birdie to round out our first hole on the back nine.

“The tee was pushed up on 14 and we took advantage by making four birdies. In total we made nine birdies and an eagle on the back nine. It proved to be the difference and gives us a one shot lead going into the final day.”

LSU leads the field with 14 birdies and in eagles with one by Stone on Hole 10. The Tigers are currently second in the field in par 3 scoring and third in par 4 and par 5 scoring.

LSU is one shot ahead of Auburn and five shots ahead of host Mississippi State on the par 72, 6,320-yard course.

Due to weather coming into the area, teams will play the final two rounds on Tuesday. The shotgun start for Round Two begins at 8:30 a.m. LSU is paired with Auburn and Mississippi State and will start on Holes 1 through 4.
