Cross Country to Compete in the Nicholls Invitational
Thibodaux, La. – The LSU men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in their second meet of the season Saturday morning at the Nicholls Farm in Thibodaux, La. The women will be running the 5k and the men’s team will be competing in the 4-mile event. The women will get things started at 8 a.m. CT while the men will start at 8:40 a.m. CT.
The Tigers will face off against Tulane, Southern University, The University of New Orleans, and the hosting team, Nicholls State.
Junior Alicia Stamey, who was one of LSU’s most consistent runners last season, will be making her season debut on Saturday. Also making his LSU debut is junior transfer George Femmer who spent his first two years at UL-Lafayette.
Both the men’s and women’s team are coming off of second place finishes in their opening meet of the season at the McNeese Opener. Freshman Jackson Martingayle put together a very impressive performance in the first competition of his collegiate career where he finished in fifth place in the 6k with a time of 18:33.1. His effort was good enough to earn himself the honor of the SEC Co-Men’s Cross Country Co-Runner of the Week. The second Tiger to finish for the men’s squad was Thomas Laville Jr. who crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 18:40.6.
On the women’s side, senior Sara Funderburk led the way with a second-place finish in the 3k competition (10:32.0). Following Funderburk was sophomore Amber Desselle who came in fourth place with a time of 10:36.9. Molly McHale was the third runner to finish in the top ten with a time of 10:52.8 (8th place). Rounding out the top five finishers for the Tigers were Jennifer Bennett and Lauren Hendry who finished in 13th and 14th respectively.
