Funderburk, Martingayle Lead Way at McNeese Opener

Lake Charles La. Friday night marked the beginning of the 2019 season for the LSU men’s and women’s cross country teams at the McNeese Opener.  Their first competition of the year took place at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex. 

The women competed in the 3k and placed in second with a score of 41 points and an average time of 10:54.2.  Meanwhile the men ran the 6k on Friday night and finished in second place scoring 50 points with an average time of 18:58.6. 

Senior Sara Funderburk lead the way for the women’ squad in their season opener with a time of 10:32.0 in the 3k.  Her finish was good for the LSU top spot and second place overall.  Amber Desselle started her sophomore season off by placing fourth and finished with a time of 10:36.9.  Molly McHale ran in her first competition of her college career last night was able to cross the finish line in eighth place with a time of 10:52.8.  Following McHale was Jennifer Bennett and Lauren Hendry who finished in 13th and 14th place respectively.  Bennett finished with a time of 11:13.1 and Hendry finished with a time of 11:16.5.

On the men’s side, freshman Jackson Martingayle was the top finisher for the Tigers in his first collegiate competition with a time of 18:33.1 which was good for fifth place.  Following Martingayle was sophomore Thomas Laville Jr. who placed in seventh overall (18:40.6).  Marshall Buhler ran a time of 18:51.1 earning him an 11th place finish.  Blake Baldassaro crossed the finish line 13th overall with a time of 19:07.9.  Garrett Hamilton closed out the tigers scoring effort with a 15th place finish with a time of 19:40.1

Both the McNeese State men’s and women’s teams finished in first place with team scores of 25 and 34 points respectively.
