Nina Geissler Defeated in Qualifiers at US Junior Open

New York, NY. – LSU women’s tennis freshman Nina Geissler fell in the qualifying rounds at the 2019 ITF Junior U.S. Open on August 30, 2019, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Selling Points

“Nina obtained great experience playing in a Grand Slam event that will provide many positives when she returns to campus,” co-head coach Michael Sell said. “She is hungry to improve and already excited to get back on the practice court.”

Match Overview

Geissler began the first set strongly against Kylie Collins and won the first two games. Collins went on a run and won the next four games, eventually taking a 5-3 lead in the set. With her back against the wall in the ninth game of the set, Geissler impressively came back from a 0-40 deficit to win the game and close the gap to 4-5. The comeback attempt fell short as Collins took the next game and clinched the first set, 6-4.

Geissler took the first game in the second set. The next few games were back and forth with the set going to 2-2 before Collins took the lead and didn’t look back on her way to a 6-2 set and match victory.
