BATON ROUGE – After another stellar performance at the plate and in the circle last week, LSU softball sophomore Shelbi Sunseri has been named SEC Player of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Sunseri led the Tigers to a sweep of Georgia, the first sweep for LSU in Athens since 2001. She hit .500 on the week with a team-high eight RBI and we total bases. She finished with a .562 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
The Santa Fe, Texas native tallied three doubles and home run. Her dinger helped the Tigers tie up game two against Georgia, 3-3 in the top of the third inning. Sunseri also picked up a victory and a save in the circle, her second save on the season.
On the season, Sunseri has been one of the best hitters in the nation. She ranks in the top 10 in four categories, including home runs (8th, 13), RBI (2nd, 47), slugging percentage (4th, 1.073) and total bases (6th, 88). She is second on the team in batting average at .463, doubles with 11 and leads the team in walks with 24.
In the circle, the sophomore is 7-4 on the year with four shutouts and two saves. She leads the team in strikeouts with 42 in 60 innings of work.
The Tigers are 28-6 on the year and sit in third place of the SEC behind Alabama and Auburn with a 7-2 record. They take on Nicholls St. Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Park.
