Diving Heads To Austin For NCAA Zones

Baton Rouge – The LSU Diving Team is all set to head to Austin, Texas, and the University of Texas, to compete in the 2019 NCAA Zone D Diving Regionals. The Tigers are back in action for the first time since the 2019 SEC Championships that concluded on February 23.

The meet will begin on Monday, March 11 at 11:00 a.m. and will conclude on March 13.  This will be the team’s final competition before the start of the NCAA Championships on March 20.

“This is the part of the season that all of our training is geared towards,” said LSU head diving coach Doug Shaffer. “I believe our preparation has been exceptional.  Now we will trust the process, be confident in the moment and confident in our mindset.  In this way we will qualify as many divers as possible for the NCAA Championships.”

Competition starts with women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter springboard on Monday, followed by women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter on Tuesday. Platform competition concludes the meet on Wednesday.

The top five female and top four male divers from each event at the zone meet will be eligible for the NCAA Championships. Additional place finishers in each event will be eligible based on the number of student-athletes from Zone D who finished in the top 16 in that event at the previous year’s NCAA Championships.

At the SEC Championships, three LSU divers earned medals.  Juan Celaya-Hernandez earned the gold on the one-meter springboard and the bronze on the platform.  Lizzie Cui claimed silver on the three-meter and one-meter.  Freshman Aimee Wilson took home the bronze on the one-meter in her very first SEC Championships.
