Duplantis is the South Central Field Athlete of the Year

Baton Rouge, La. – One day after being named to The Bowerman Watch List for the third time this season, freshman phenom Mondo Duplantis has been named the USTFCCCA South Central Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season.

Duplantis has won gold at all four meets he has competed in this season. He started the campaign off with a win at the Razorback Invitational with a pole vault clearance of 5.83 meters (19’ 1.50”). His next two performances came at home in Baton Rouge. He cleared 5.87 meters (19’ 3”) at the Bayou Bengal for the top spot and his winning height at the LSU Twilight was 5.68 meters (18’ 7.50”).

His latest and greatest performance came last weekend at the SEC Championships. He broke Shawn Barber’s (Akron) four-year old collegiate record with a clearance of 5.92 meters (19’ 5”) en route to securing a gold medal at the conference meet.

Duplantis becomes the first male athlete from LSU to win this award since Damar Forbes did so in 2012. Duplantis will enter next week’s NCAA Championships as the favorite in the pole vault. He will jump on Friday night, March 8.
