Gagne Falls in Round of 32 at U.S. Amateur

Pebble Beach, Calif.  – Luis Gagne’s journey at the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship hosted at Pebble Beach came to a close on Thursday with a loss to Austin Squires in the Round of 32.

Gagne, the No. 46 seed, was taking on the 14th-seeded Squires in the Round of 32. It was a back and forth battle all match long that ended up seeing Squires walk away as the victor after the 19th hole. Gagne started the round off by winning the first hole in what would prove to be his only lead of the match. After falling one behind after No. 5, Gagne never regained the lead, but he pushed the match back to all square four different times. Entering the 18th hole down one, Gagne birdied the par 5 18th at Pebble Beach to force extra holes before he dropped the 19th hole (No. 1) to Squires.

The loss ends a wonderful summer for Gagne in which he garnered a share of low amateur honors at the U.S. Open in June and played at the Arnold Palmer Cup as a member of the International Squad. Gagne’s junior year at LSU was the second best in school history as he registered a career-best 71.16 strokes per round on the way to leading LSU to a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Stockton Regional.
