BATON ROUGE – LSU gymnastics head coach D-D Breaux, who just completed her 41st season as the head of the program, was recognized as one of five Louisiana Legends in a ceremony at Louisiana’s Old State Capitol Thursday.
In its 28th year presented by Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting, the event honors the best and brightest of Louisiana’s sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in a variety of disciplines and have brought honor to the state.
Breaux is the ninth LSU Athletics coach or student-athlete to be recognized as a Louisiana Legend. She joined Bob Petit, Bert Jones, Jim Taylor, Skip Bertman, Sue Gunter, Paul Dietzel, Jerry Stovall, and Dale Brown as honorees.
For more than 40 seasons now, Breaux has led the program to 29 NCAA Championships appearances and seven trips to the NCAA Super Six. Overall, LSU gymnasts have earned 235 All-America honors and won 13 individual national championships, including 12 since 2002.
In the last two seasons, the Tigers have won back-to-back Southeastern Conference regular season and meet championships. The squad has been on a dominating run against league opponents with an unblemished record the last four seasons.
Under Breaux’s leadership, gymnastics has been the main attraction in Baton Rouge on a Friday night. LSU fans have packed the PMAC and set new average attendance records in each of the last six seasons. In 2018, LSU finished first in the SEC and second in the nation in average attendance for the first time in school history.
The PMAC was sold out for back-to-back meets for the first time in school history this season against Alabama and Kentucky. A crowd of 13,729 witnessed the Tigers take down the Crimson Tide and set the single-meet attendance record.
Breaux will make history in 2019 when she begins her 42nd season as head coach. The Donaldsonville, Louisiana legend will surpass Adolph Rupp of Kentucky as the longest tenured coach in the history of the SEC.
