Four From Softball Named to NFCA All-Region Teams

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU seniors Sahvanna Jaquish and Bailey Landry, along with junior Allie Walljasper were named to the 2017 NFCA All-South Region First Team, while junior Carley Hoover was named to the NFCA All-South Region Second Team the organization announced on Thursday.

Jaquish has been named to the region first team all four years of her LSU career, while Landry is making the first-team list for the second time and first time since 2015. Walljasper is on the first team for the second straight year, while Hoover is on the second team for the second consecutive year as well.

Landry is currently leading the team with a .431 batting average in 59 games this season, sitting seven hits away from tying the single-season record and five away from tying the career mark with 285 in over 200 career games in the Purple & Gold. It’s Landry’s third postseason award in two weeks, as she was named first team All-SEC and to the SEC All-Tournament Team.

Also being named to the all-tournament team and pulling in second-team all-conference honors is Jaquish, who is currently second on the team with a .343 batting average pulls in her fourth all-region honor as she leads the team with 53 RBIs and has eight doubles and eight home runs. Earlier this season, the Highland, California, native set the school record for RBIs with 260 with the postseason left to play.

Leading the LSU pitching staff this season has been Walljasper, as her 16-4 overall record leads the rotation along with her five solo and one combined shutout, walking just 21 batters in 133.1 innings. Opponents are hitting just .203 against Walljasper when she’s in the circle, as the Manteca, California, native also has two saves on the year.

Hoover checks in with the pitching staff’s lowest ERA at 1.08 and lowest opponent batting average a .159, pitching a four shutouts with a combined one and leading the team with 146 strikeouts. The South Carolina native is 11-6 on the year and has thrown the team’s only no-hitter of the season, coming against Conference USA Tournament Champion Louisiana Tech earlier this season.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American squads.

The 2017 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 31, via NFCA.org.

LSU will open the 2017 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. against Fairfield at Tiger Park.
