NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The LSU women’s tennis team will compete in the SEC Tournament as the No. 8 seed, facing off against the ninth-seeded Texas A&M Aggies at the Currey Tennis Center Thursday at 3 p.m CT.
The Tigers (13-9, 6-7 SEC) defeated the Aggies (14-11; 6-7 SEC) by a score of 4-2 when the two teams faced off at the LSU Tennis Complex in March. Each of LSU’s top four courts defeated their Aggie opponents in straight sets, and senior Joana Valle Costa clinched the win that got the Tigers off to their best SEC start in 20 seasons.
Both teams received a bye for Wednesday’s opening round, advancing straight to the second round on Thursday.
The winner will advance to the SEC quarterfinals and face top-seeded Vanderbilt, which defeated No. 1 Florida in the final match of the regular season to claim the SEC title.
LSU was also the No. 8 seed in last year’s SEC tournament and defeated ninth-seeded Kentucky 4-3 in the second round before falling to the eventual tournament champion Florida in the quarterfinals.
LSU has advanced past the SEC quarterfinals three times in school history, most recently in 2015 when the sixth-seeded Tigers advanced to the semifinal round past the third-seeded Aggies
