Wright Wins Four-Ball Match at Palmer Cup

MERSEYSIDE, England – LSU’s Zach Wright helped close Team USA’s deficit to the Europeans to 6-4 on the opening day of the 2016 Arnold Palmer Cup as he teamed with Illinois All-American Charlie Danielson to take down Stuart Grehan and Lars van Meijel by a 4-and-2 margin in their afternoon four-ball match at Formby Golf Club.

They never trailed in the match while taking the lead right out of the gate with back-to-back birdies at holes No. 1 and No. 2 before Wright pushed their advantage to 3-up with a birdie at the fifth hole.

The Europeans won their only hole of the match at No. 7 to cut their deficit to 2-down, but the Americans closed it out on the back nine when Danielson birdied No. 15 and Wright birdied No. 16 for the 4-and-2 victory. Theirs was among three victories for the Americans in five four-ball matches played in the afternoon after the Europeans jumped out to a 4-1 lead without dropping a match in the morning foursomes.

Texas’ Doug Ghim and Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris defeated Florida’s Sam Horsfield and Vanderbilt Matthias Schwab, 2-and-1, and USC’s Rico Hoey and San Diego State’s Nahum Mendoza III defeated Stirling’s Mathias Eggenberger and Augusta’s Robin Petersson, 1-up, to put the United States on the scoreboard in the afternoon four-ball matches.

Wright and Danielson were unbeaten on the day as they also halved their morning foursome against Eggenberger and Petersson. The Europeans took a late 1-up lead with a birdie at No. 16, but the Americans scored a halve with a birdie at the 18th green to end the match all square.

Wright will square off against Eggenberger once again on Saturday morning as singles matches are scheduled to get underway at 3 a.m. CT. They will tee off in Match No. 9 of the day and No. 19 of the tournament from the front nine beginning at 4:36 a.m. CT.
