All Varsity Sports Perform Well in NCAA's APR

BATON ROUGE — All of LSU’s varsity sports performed well in the annual report of Academic Progress Rates (APR) released Wednesday by the NCAA.  The ratings released this week by the NCAA are part of the NCAA’s continuing academic reform efforts.

The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes’ eligibility and retention for a pre-determined time period.  This year’s report is for the four-year period beginning in the fall of 2009. Points are awarded each semester for academic eligibility and retention, with two points possible per semester per student-athlete.

LSU’s newest varsity sport – sand volleyball – was not rated this year as they are just in its first year of existence.

NCAA sports falling below the established cutoff point of 930 are subject to penalties including scholarship reductions. A perfect APR score is 1000.  All LSU teams scored above 930 and 13 LSU teams scored 975 or above, including men’s tennis and men’s cross country with a perfect score of 1000.

“I’m very pleased with our APR results and I think our scores are indicative of the emphasis that is placed on academics here at LSU,” vice chancellor and director of athletics Joe Alleva said. “The APR continues to be a vital tool to measure academic performance in college athletics. We stress to our student-athletes that being successful in the classroom is every bit as important as succeeding in competition.

The LSU men’s basketball program recorded a single year APR score of 1,000 in the most recent survey year of 2012-13, one of just four men’s basketball teams in the Southeastern Conference to have a 1,000 perfect score that year.

Other programs that had a 1,000 score during the 2012-13 academic season were men’s cross country, men’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s tennis.

“Our student-athletes, coaches and counselors are committed to academics and getting a great education and I think these results are proof of that.”

In addition to men’s tennis and men’s cross country, other LSU teams with APR scores of 975 or above include: women’s tennis (992), women’s golf (991), women’s indoor track (984), women’s outdoor track (984), women’s volleyball (983), softball (983), women’s swimming and diving (982), men’s swimming and diving (984), men’s golf (980), women’s cross country (978), and women’s soccer (978).
