BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team has reached a season-high ranking of No. 40 this week as released by the ITA on Thursday.
This ranking is both the highest under head coach Julia S. Sell and the highest the Lady Tigers have been ranked since reaching a No. 37 ranking the week of April 10, 2012.
The Lady Tigers were ranked No. 43 last week after defeating Mississippi State and Tennessee in the first two rounds of the SEC Tournament. LSU then fell to conference tournament champion Georgia in the quarterfinals.
Additionally, Joana Vale Costa has reached No. 74 in the new singles rankings. The freshman jumped eight spots in the singles rankings after accumulating an 11-8 overall singles record and earning All-SEC Second-Team and All-SEC Freshman-Team honors.
Vale Costa garnered three wins over nationally ranked opponents this season, which is the first time a Lady Tiger has topped more than two ranked opponents since Whitney Wolf captured six wins over ranked opponents in the 2010-11 season.
LSU faces off with No. 24 Pepperdine during the NCAA Tournament first round in May 9 at the University of California at Berkeley campus. The first serve is slated for noon CT.
