Women's Track & Field Solidifies No. 1 Ranking

BATON ROUGE – After defending their team title at the third-annual Battle on the Bayou with victories over Arizona State, Penn State and Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers have strengthened their grip on the No. 1 national ranking in the latest Track & Field News Women’s Collegiate Dual Meet Top 25 Rankings released Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers ran their dual meet record to a perfect 7-0 this season after scoring 188 points at the Battle on the Bayou as they were followed by Penn State (139) in second place, Arizona State (134) in third place and Mississippi State (96) in fourth place in the final women’s team standings during Saturday’s competition.

The Lady Tigers boast an impressive dual-meet record in 2013 with wins over No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 4 Penn State, No. 5 Arkansas, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 UCLA and No. 19 TCU in the latest dual meet rankings.

LSU’s women swept Texas A&M and Arkansas at the Texas A&M Triangular in College Station on Jan. 19 and swept UCLA and TCU at UCLA’s Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles on April 6.

The Tigers are also up two spots to No. 10 in the latest Track & Field News Men’s Collegiate Dual Meet Top 25 Rankings also released on Wednesday with their dual meet performance in 2013. The Tigers are also ranked No. 10 nationally in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 men’s power ranking released Tuesday.

LSU Track & Field returns home to play host to its annual LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium. They will then wrap up the 2013 regular season next weekend with a trip to Philadelphia for the 119th running of the Penn Relay Carnival scheduled for April 25-27 at historic Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania.
