Track & Field in Top 5 Prior to SEC Outdoors

BATON ROUGE – The LSU track and field teams will compete with a pair of top-five rankings this weekend when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the 2010 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships as both the Tigers and Lady Tigers are among the favorites to bring home the conference crown.

The Lady Tigers hold firm at No. 2 this week, while the Tigers move up two spots to No. 5 in the current power ranking released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Lady Tigers lead a group of four SEC programs that are currently ranked in the Top 25 nationally as they will battle the likes of No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Arkansas and No. 15 Arkansas for the league title.

The men’s side is even more wide open as eight of the 11 programs in the SEC enter the meet with a Top 25 ranking. In order to win the conference championship, the fifth-ranked Tigers must hold off such nationally-ranked teams as No. 3 Florida, No. 9 Auburn, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 15 Mississippi State, No. 24 Georgia and No. 25 Arkansas.

The 2010 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville beginning Thursday. The four-day meet will come to an end Sunday with this year’s SEC Champions crowned in an awards ceremony at approximately 8 p.m. CT.
