Soccer Loses for First Time in Spring Season

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The three-time defending SEC Western Division champion LSU soccer team continued its preparation for the 2010 season this past weekend with an exhibition match against division rival Auburn on Saturday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

LSU dropped its first decision of the spring season with a 2-1 defeat to Auburn as the club now sits at 3-1 overall in four fixtures, which includes a 5-0 shutout of Northwestern State on March 24, a 6-0 shutout of Nicholls State on March 30 and a 2-0 shutout of McNeese State on April 15.

LSU struck first in the 12th minute of play when rising junior and Second-Team All-SEC honoree Allysha Chapman pounced on a loose ball and fired a shot into the back of the net from inside the area following a free kick into the Auburn defensive wall by senior forward Courtney Alexander.

The advantage was short-lived as Auburn scored a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes of the first half for a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Auburn held on for a 2-1 win at the host site for the SEC Tournament.

“This was your typical exciting back-and-forth kind of game between LSU and Auburn. This is what you have come to expect in this series,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “I thought the result was fair with the flow of the game. We had some chances that we didn’t convert, but I’m pleased with our effort. I was especially pleased with the effort of Alex Ramsey, one of our freshmen who joined us in January. I know this was her best performance of the spring season. She’s someone we’ll certainly rely on this season.”

The Tigers will wrap up their spring exhibition season on Saturday when they welcome SMU to the LSU Soccer Complex in a match scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kickoff.
