BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 27 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2007 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Wednesday.
The LSU men’s swimming team topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing six student-athletes on the list, while the women’s swimming team added two more for a total of eight from the swimming team. The women’s gymnastics team was second with four student-athletes honored.
The women’s tennis teams had three members on the list, followed by the football, men’s golf, women’s soccer, and both men’s and women’s track and field with two representatives each. The men’s basketball team women’s golf team each placed one student-athlete on the list.
A total of 503 freshmen student-athletes, an overall increase of 14 over last year and 34 over two years ago, were named to the 2007 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. A total of 2,160 student-athletes around the league earned Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2006-07.
The University of South Carolina topped the list with 64 freshmen student-athletes on the academic roster. Georgia was second with 56 honorees, followed by Alabama with 55 and Florida with 54.
Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The 2007 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2006-07 academic calendar.
