Coppola and Nuss Win USAV Collegiate Beach Championship

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – For the second consecutive year, juniors Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss won the USAV Collegiate Beach Championship, defeating Brook Bauer and Deahna Kraft from Pepperdine in three sets Saturday afternoon.

Playing against the top collegiate pairs from America, Coppola and Nuss solidified their dominance in the sand this week. After going 33-4 on the year during the team season, Coppola and Nuss went 6-0 this week to defend their title.

In the semifinal match, Coppola and Nuss would face familiar opponents in Madison Fitzpatrick and Alaina Chacon from Florida State. Fitzpatrick and Chacon began the season as FSU’s No. 3 pair, but by the end of the year they were playing on the top court.

Chacon and Fitzpatrick ended Coppola and Nuss’s 32 set win streak in the CCSA Championship. That court ultimately went unfinished as FSU clinched three courts for the championship before Court 1 finished.

Today in Hermosa Beach during the semifinals, Coppola and Nuss would not drop a set, defeating the FSU duo, 21-18 and 21-17, sending the pair to the championship match at the USAV Collegiate Beach Championship for the second straight year.

In the championship match, Coppola and Nuss faced Pepperdine’s Brook Bauer and Deahna Kraft. The two pairs met earlier in the year when LSU competed in California at the East vs. West Challenge and Coppola and Nuss won in two sets. At the NCAA Championship one week ago, Coppola and Nuss defeated Bauer and Heidi Dyer in two sets when LSU and Pepperdine faced each other.

The first set of the championship was a back and forth battle. Trailing 17-16, Coppola and Nuss would go on to score four consecutive points and ultimately take the set, 21-18.

Bauer and Kraft would not go quietly in the second set though, handing Coppola and Nuss their first set loss of the week, 23-21, forcing a third set for the championship.

With the third set tied at 12, Coppola and Nuss reeled off three straight points, taking the set, 15-12, and winning their second consecutive USAV Collegiate Beach Championship.
