Student-Athlete Graduates Honored in Tribute Ceremony

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Athletics Department, the Tiger Athletic Foundation and the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored 84 members of the LSU Class of 2019 at The Tribute on Thursday evening at the South Stadium Club inside Tiger Stadium.

The annual event recognizes all LSU student-athletes graduating in the spring and summer of 2019 and presents them with a special graduation stole made specifically for LSU athletes.

Dr. Stacia Haynie, LSU Executive Vice President and Provost, was one of several LSU administrators to address the class.

Tiger gymnast McKenna Kelley, an All-American and SEC champion, was selected as the class speaker.

“There is something especially extraordinary about LSU,” Kelley said. “I will never forget Friday nights inside the PMAC. It was a dream that became a reality. Being a student-athlete has truly taught us what it means to be a Fighting Tiger. We chose to experience college in the most intense away because we love LSU and we bleed purple and gold. The pride and tradition we’ve been a part of will continue on for years after because of our legacy.”

The LSU Athletics Class of 2019 includes five NCAA Champions – gymnasts Ashleigh Gnat and Sarah Finnegan, track athletes Kortnei Johnson, Vernon Norwood, and 2013 Honda Sports Award winner Kimberlyn Duncan. Eight student-athletes will receive their master’s degrees during the weekend ceremonies, including 2016 Golden Glove winner A.J. Andrews.

A few members of the class were unable to attend the ceremony as Elyse Thornhill, Sydney Bourg, Akiya Thymes and Allie Walljasper were competing in College Station, Texas, at the 2019 SEC Softball Championship and Hannah Bourque, Christian Boyd Kortnei Johnson, Arthur Price, Amy Stelly, Kaitlyn Walker, were in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the 2019 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Several baseball players also missed the Tribute due to key SEC games at Arkansas over the weekend – Brandt Broussard, Antoine Duplantis, Caleb Gilbert, and Clay Moffitt.

LSU will hold 2019 Commencement ceremonies on Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, with summer graduation set for Friday, August 2.
