LSU Claims Four SEC Athlete of the Week Honors in T&F

Baton Rouge, La. Tonea Marshall (Women’s Runner of the Week), Jaron Flournoy (Men’s Co-Runner of the Week), Sha’Carri Richardson (Women’s Freshman of the Week) and Mondo Duplantis (Men’s Freshman of the Week) were all awarded with SEC honors on Tuesday afternoon.

Marshall ran an NCAA leading and 2019 world No. 2 of 12.81 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles at last Saturday’s LSU Alumni Gold meet to garner her attention. The 12.81 readout was the best of her career and it ranks as the fifth fastest in LSU history. The 12.81 helped her beat out 2015 world champion Danielle Phillips of Jamaica in the race. She also served as the lead leg of the women’s 4×100 meter that picked up a silver finish.

Flournoy was name the SEC Men’s Co-Runner of the Week after running an all-conditions best of 20.13 in the 200 meters to win his event. The mark ranks second in the NCAA, and he also anchored the men’s 4×100 meter relay to a silver finish with a readout of 38.82 seconds.

Duplantis and Richardson were named the SEC Freshmen of the Week. Duplantis opened his outdoor collegiate pole vaulting career with a clearance of 18′ 2.5” (5.55 meters) for his gold medal in the event. The mark ranks No. 3 in LSU history, No. 7 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the SEC. Richardson had her best NCAA legal time of the year in the 100 meters with an 11.12 (+2.8) to take the top collegiate spot and finish third overall; the time of 11.12 ranks third in the NCAA.

LSU has garnered a total of eight SEC Athlete of the Week awards during the outdoor season. For Marshall and Richardson, it’s their second time being recognized while it’s the first this season for Duplantis and Flournoy.
