Richardson, Corley Earn Singles Wins as LSU Falls to State
Starkville, Miss – No. 9-ranked sophomore Eden Richardson and junior Paris Corley defeated their opponents in straight sets as the LSU women’s tennis team fell to Mississippi State by a score of 4-3 on Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in Starkville.
With the loss, the Tigers’ regular season record finishes at 15-10 overall and 5-8 in SEC play.
“Lots of positives with the doubles point and the singles performances of Paris and Eden,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “We thought we had one more victory in us, but fell just short. Now it’s the postseason, so time to get back to work, make a few adjustments, and get energized for the SEC tournament.”
The Tigers took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3.
Corley and freshman Anna Loughlan were the first pair off the court, defeating Emma Antonaki and Annastasia Rentouli 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles.
Richardson earned her eighth ranked win of the season when she defeated No. 65 Antonaki in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 singles.
Corley earned LSU’s third point of the day after she was victorious at the No. 4, defeating Tamara Racine in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The win is Corley’s 13th of the dual season, and 21st overall.
Magda Adaloglou earned Mississippi State its first point of the match, defeating Bridges 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3.
Rentouli cut the lead to 3-2 after she defeated senior Jessica Golovin at the No. 2, 7-6(1), 6-3.
The match was tied up at 3-3 after Roberts was victorious at the No. 6, defeating sophomore Luba Vasilyuk 6-3, 6-4.
The Bulldogs clinched the match after Braun grinded out a three-set victory over Loughlan at the No. 5. Braun won the first set 6-4 before Loughlan responded with a 6-4 second set victory. Braun clinched the point and match with a 6-3 win in the third set.
The Tigers will head to College Station this week to compete in the 2019 SEC Championship. LSU is the ninth seed and will begin play in the second round against No. 8 seed Alabama on Thursday, April 18 at 2 p.m. CT.
