AUSTIN – Juan Celaya-Hernandez took the top spot in the one-meter consolation final on the second day of the 2019 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas.
Celaya-Hernandez just missed out on advancing to the finals as the junior finished in ninth place in the prelim with a score of 318.50. The top eight finishers move on to the finals while the divers that finish from ninth to 16thget a chance to compete in the consolation final immediately following the prelim round.
In the consolation final, Celaya-Hernandez finished first with a score of 362.20.
Also on the boards for the Tigers, senior Matt McClellan finished in 28thplace after diving to a score of 280.10.
Head Diving Coach Doug Shaffer
“Juan showed today what a true champion and class act he is. He did not perform any where near his potential in the preliminaries but instead of crying and moaning about it, he brushed it off and won the consolation finals with an excellent list. I am also super proud of Matt McClellan as he performed well and had his highest NCAA finish of his career.”
