Beach Ranked No. 4 for Third Consecutive Week

BATON ROUGE – Coming off a 4-0 weekend at the Tiger Beach Challenge, the LSU Beach Volleyball team (13-4) will remain the No. 4 team in the nation the AVCA and DiG Magazine announced Monday.

LSU has won six consecutive matches over the past three weekends, allowing the Tigers to hold onto the No. 4 ranking, which is tied for the highest in program history. The only thing that has prevented the Tigers from climbing higher has been the consistency of the three teams ahead of them in No. 1 UCLA (15-0), No. 2 USC (16-2) and No. 3 Florida State (14-4).

This is the 29th consecutive week that LSU will appear in the AVCA top-10.

So far this season, LSU has defeated five top-10 teams, including FSU on February 23, 3-2. One week after the Tigers notched their first ever victory over the Seminoles though, FSU came back to defeat LSU, 4-1, as they leapfrogged the Tigers.

The following weekend at the East vs. West Challenge, the Tigers defeated then No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 5 Hawaii, but fell to No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 USC. Since the rankings on March 11, the top-four has not fluctuated in either the AVCA or DiG polls.

The Tigers will have an opportunity to make some more noise this weekend though when they travel to Miami for the FIU Surf and Turf Challenge to face five top-20 teams. The weekend will start on Friday with three matches, beginning with No. 1 UCLA, No. 10 Stetson and No. 7 FIU. On Saturday the Tigers will face No. 15 Grand Canyon and No. 16 FAU.

This weekend could prove to be pivotal as the season nears an end as it will be the only time the Tigers will face eastern foes Stetson and Florida International. With so many teams vying for one of the eight coveted spots at the NCAA Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama, it will be an important weekend for LSU.

The Tigers have gone to the NCAA Championship the past two years and have their eyes on going back to Gulf Shores in 2019. Last season, LSU became the first team from the east region to earn an at-large bid to the championship in the three-year history of championship as an NCAA sanctioned event.
