BATON ROUGE – The 9/8-ranked LSU softball team defeated No. 7 Florida Monday evening, 3-2 in walk-off fashion to claim the series victory. LSU improves to 24-6 on the year and 4-2 in the SEC, while Florida falls to 24-6 overall and 2-4 in the SEC.

Florida put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning to start off the game, but LSU showed up in the bottom of the third. Savannah Stewart battled at the plate and walked on a full count, followed by another walk from Amanda Sanchez. Shelbi Sunseri stepped up to the plate and hit a single up the middle, scoring Stewart. The Gators led 2-1 going into the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Shemiah Sanchez reached base on a walk, followed by an Amanda Doyle single through the right side. With two runners on base and the Tigers down by one run, Amber Serrett reached on a fielding error and Sanchez came in to score, tying up the game, 2-2.

The Tigers held off the Florida bats in the top of the seventh inning with an out at first and a double-play to move into the bottom of the inning. Aliyah Andrews singled to third base and made it safely to first. With a 3-0 count, Amanda Sanchez ripped the ball to left-center field, scoring Andrews and claiming the walk-off win for the Tigers.

Shelby Wickersham claimed the victory in the circle, finishing with four strikeouts, three of which came from a five at-bat span in the fourth and fifth innings. She is now 7-1 on the year.

Torina’s Thoughts

On the walk-off win…

“It was awesome. What a huge win for our team and just a huge weekend. I thought they fought hard and I even thought they fought hard on Saturday night in the loss. I just think they showed fight all weekend and I’m really proud of their efforts.”

On Aliyah Andrews

“Her coming up with that bunt hit in the last inning was huge. Everything about her is a game changer. Her speed, defensive efforts and everything she does proves that she is one of the best players out there and we’re lucky to have her.”

On team’s confidence after series win…

“It is a big moment for our team. It affects our position in the nation and conference but most importantly it just raises our confidence moving forward. I think they will feel good about these wins and it will take us a long way.”

Amanda Sanchez

On the team’s effort…

“I’m so proud of this team. Florida is a really good program and they have been for a long time so it’s nice to get a series win over them. It just goes to show that the sky is the limit for this team and I’m proud of everyone because everyone contributed.”

Aliyah Andrews

On the final inning…

“I knew in that last inning my job was to pass the bat and I knew that my short game was one of the ways to do that. Bunting is something we always work on at practice so when it comes to situations like that, I feel confident that I can get the job done.”

Shelby Wickersham

On responding after giving up first inning homer…

“I think I came into the game a little anxious and nervous, but after I gave up the home run I told myself to just settle down and pitch my game. I know that my teammates have my back and as long as I keep the ball in the park we can work with that. So, I just focused on mixing pitches and trusting my teammates.”

  • Sunseri has now reached base safely in all 30 games on the year.
