Women Victorious Over Tulane and Loyola

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The LSU women’s swimming and diving team defeated both Tulane and Loyola Friday. LSU defeated Tulane 187-108 and Loyola 229-55. The women are now 4-2 on the season.

“I thought the women really rose to a great challenge,” said swimming head coach Dave Geyer. “Diving and the relay got us off to a great start to gain some momentum. Kate Zimmer had a great 100-yard backstroke to start off with eight wins in a row with some second and third place finishes that added depth for us too.”

The women won 11 of 16 events during the meet.

The Tiger’s first victory came the 200-yard medley relay, as Kate Zimmer, Summer Spradley, Helen Grossman, and Leyre Casarin combined for a time of 1:43.26.

The Tigers then won eight consecutive wins, starting with Kate Zimmer‘s victory in the 100-yard backstroke, out-touching Tulane’s Paris Zhang to win with a time of 55.48 seconds.

Summer Spradley then won the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:02.64

The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard butterfly for the second meet in a row, as Helen Grossman, Gabrielle Pick, and Nicole Rozier swept the podiums with times of 2:01.94, 2:02.28, and 2:03.66, respectively.

Haylee Knight took the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.65 seconds.

Up next was three-meter diving, and Lizzie Cui continued her dominance as she won the event, scoring 342.3. Aimee Wilson took second after scoring 276.03.

Knight and Spradley then won their second individual events after Knight won gold in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 51.86 seconds, while Spradley won the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:16.08.

Cassie Kalisz picked up a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.20, winning the event by over four seconds.

The Tigers swept the podium on one-meter diving to sweep the diving events. Cui took gold after scoring 323.10, and was followed by freshmen Aimee Wilson and Jolie Blodgett, who scored 307.05 and 272.78.

Cui is now 8-0 this season and undefeated in her last 18 dual-meet events, while Blodgett qualified for NCAA Zones on one-meter.

“In the three-meter event, Lizzie showed her experience by handling challenging competitive conditions like a veteran. Aimee and Jolie got an eye-opening dose of diving out of their comfort zone. In the end, valuable lessons were learned today. They all rallied for the one-meter event and Jolie earned the NCAA Zones score.”

The final win of the meet came courtesy of Helen Grossman, who won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.83 seconds.

Next up for the women is the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, TX for the swimmers and the UT Diving Invitational in Austin, TX for the divers. Both events are November 14-16.
