Women Claim Title at McNeese Opener
Baton Rouge, La. – The LSU women’s cross country team opened up it’s 2018 season with a win at the McNeese Opener with 29 team points on Friday night at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex.
“The women ran really well,” head coach Mark Rinker. “What a race by Julia Palin; it was the first cross country race of her collegiate career and she paced us. On the men’s side, Adam Wise did the same thing in his collegiate debut. It was great to see those two perform so well.
“Overall, I was happy with the effort tonight, but we still have a lot of work left to do. We just have to trust the process and plan that has been laid out for us and by October we will reap the benefits.”
Palin led LSU’s charge to the team title as she was the first woman wearing the Purple and Gold to cross the finish line with a 3k time of 10:13.8 to place second. Palin was followed closely by Hannah Bourque (10:17.3/third place) and Erika Lewis (10:28.8/fifth place). Alicia Stamey (eighth place) and Monica Guillot (11th place) rounded out LSU’s scoring performance with times of 10:39.9 and 10:50.1, respectively. The Tigers edged out McNeese State for the title by 14 points.
The men relied on the finishes of two upperclassmen and a true freshman to help them finish fourth in the men’s 4k race. Adam Wise ran brilliantly alongside Harrison Martingayle on the way to a two-three finish. Wise clocked a time of 12:35.7 in his collegiate debut, and Martingayle followed with a time of 12:36.3. Eric Coston crossed the finish line in sixth place with a 4k time of 12:47.0, and Michael Lee (30th place/13:42.9) and Hayden Courrege (32nd place/13:49.8) were the fourth and fifth scorers for LSU
