Celaya-Hernandez Shines on International Stage
BATON ROUGE – Record-setting LSU diver Juan Celaya-Hernandez has continued to excel at various international competitions this summer. The rising junior has competed on the FINA Diving Grand Prix Series this month and has walked away with multiple medals.
The FINA Diving Grand Prix Series is a series of nine international diving competitions throughout the year showcasing the world’s elite divers.
Countries participating in the Series include: Mexico, China, USA, Spain, Russia, Croatia, Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Great Britain, Netherlands, Canada.
“This is huge for Juan,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Winning on the international stage is an outstanding feat and bodes well for Juan, Mexico and his aspiration to compete in Tokyo (Olympics in 2020).”
On July 8 at the FINA Diving Grand Prix No. 3 event in Bolzano, Italy, Celaya-Hernandez teamed up with fellow Mexican Yahel Castillo to take silver in the men’s 3-meter synchronized event.
Celaya-Hernandez then traveled to Madrid, Spain to take part in FINA Diving Grand Prix No. 4 from July 13-15. In Madrid, he teamed up with Castillo to post a score of 405.15 to win the men’s 3-meter synchro event. The rising junior also won an individual event, standing on top of the podium after scoring 421.20 in the men’s 3-meter springboard.
“I am very happy with my performance,” explained Celaya-Hernandez. “Having the opportunity to represent my university and my country around the world is amazing.”
