Newton Named Florida Player of the Year

Baton Rouge, La. – Incoming midfielder Abbey Newton was named the 2017-18 Florida Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year on Monday.

Newton capped off an unprecedented high school career by winning her seventh-career state title as a member of the St. Johns Country Day program in February. As a senior, Newton tallied an impressive 35 goals to go along 26 assists to help lead her team to an undefeated season (26-0-0).

A varsity contributor since the sixth grade, Newton has helped St. Johns win back-to-back USA Today/United Soccer Coaches national titles in 2017 and 2018. Newton closed her career with a goal against Miami Country Day in the state title game as St. Johns won the contest by a tally of 6-0 pushing its win streak to 70 matches.

Her career high school stats are unparalleled with a total of 392 points (134 goals and 124 assists). She became the first ever girl to garner the Florida Times-Union’s All-First Coast Soccer Player of the Year honors in back-to-back years. Newton is set to arrive in Baton Rouge in early August with the rest of the 2018 squad.
