Richardson Earns Career-Best Win in Quarterfinal Loss

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Standout freshman Eden Richardson picked up the highest-ranked win of her career over the No. 14 player in the country as the No. 39 LSU women’s tennis team fell to ninth-ranked Florida by a score of 4-2 in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament at Barksdale Stadium Friday morning.

The Tigers fell to 15-10 with the loss while Florida moved to 17-7, advancing to Saturday’s semifinal round.

LSU’s top doubles pairing of Richardson and Jessica Golovin, ranked No. 39 in the country, picked up its third top-15 win of the season, defeating No. 13 Anna Danilina/Victoria Emma by a score of 6-2. Richardson and Golovin improved to 13-6 in doubles and 7-4 in SEC competition.

Florida would rally to take the doubles point, however, with wins on courts 2 and 3, giving the Gators the early 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.

Florida’s lead grew to 2-0 after Katie Kubicz defeated Ashton Rabalais, 6-1, 6-1, on court six. The Gators’ lead grew again to 3-0 after No. 90 McCartney Kessler topped No. 78 Golovin, 6-2, 6-3 on court three.

Kennan Johnson tallied the first point for the Tigers after a dominant 6-2, 6-4 showing against Florida’s Victoria Emma on court four to narrow the score to 3-1. With the win, Johnson improved to 20-11 thus far in her debut season in the Purple and Gold.

Playing in just her third match on court one, Richardson (28-4) improved to 3-0 at the top spot with an unbelievable performance against Florida senior Anna Danilina (26-10). Richardson handily defeated Danilina, 6-1, 7-5, to earn the highest-ranked win of her career and run her current win streak to 16-straight matches.

The Gators wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court five as Peggy Porter defeated Luba Vasilyuk to clinch the match for the Gators.

The Tigers will return to Baton Rouge and await the results from the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis selection show on May 1.
