Baton Rouge, La. – Teeing off in Tuesday’s final round trailing No. 33 Ole Miss by five strokes, the ninth-ranked LSU men’s golf team used a 11-under par 277 to run away with the team title at the Old Waverly Championship.
The Tigers delicately carved up the Old Waverly Golf Club with 22 birdies in the closing round to finish as the only team under par for the tournament with a 9-under par 855 (287-291-277) to win the event by 13 shot. The 277 shot in the final round by LSU is their seventh round of the season that has been under 280. No. 23 South Florida took runner-up honors with a 4-over par 868.
Freshman Trey Winstead came out and set the tone early by birdieing seven of the first 11 holes he played on his way to a 5-under par 67 in the final round. Winstead paced LSU with 12 birdies during the 54-hole tournament to earn himself his best finish of his collegiate career, a tie for third place at with a 4-under par 212 (70-75-67).The freshman’s par-4 scoring average of 3.93 throughout the tournament was the second-best average of the week. Winstead now owns five top-10 finishes this season, which is the most on the team, and it is the second time he has shot a 67 this season; he registered a 67 at the Valspar Collegiate in late March on the par 71 Floridian Golf Club.
Luis Gagne carded his third top-10 showing of the season with the exact same score as Winstead, a 4-under par 212 (72-69-71). The junior All-American absolutely dominated the par 3s this week by combining to shoot a collective three-under par on the 12 par 3s he played over the past two days which resulted in the best average (2.75) in the field of 84 players. Gagne’s final round featured three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys.
Jacob Bergeron carded his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 3-under par 69. After going on out in 35 strokes with three birdies, he played the back nine in 34 strokes with two birdies and seven pars to put the finishing touches on his third top-10 finish of the season (74-76-69-219/+3). Bergeron rolled in 10 birdies at the Old Waverly Golf Club to rank seventh in that category.
Philip Barbaree bettered his positioning by 16 spots on Tuesday thanks to a 2-under par 70 that featured four birdies. Barbaree finished the tournament with a 5-over par 221 (75-76-70) to earn a tie for 16th place. Nathan Jeansonne closed out the final regular season tournament of the year with a 4-over par 220 (71-71-78) that earned him a tie for 12th place.
