Cui, Celaya-Hernandez Win Again on Day Two

AUBURN, Ala. – LSU divers Lizzie Cui and Juan Celaya-Hernandez won both events at the Auburn Diving Invite for the second straight day. Cui took home gold on the women’s three-meter springboard while Celaya-Hernandez won the men’s one-meter event.

Celaya-Hernandez remained undefeated on springboard by posting a score of 388.25, beating runner-up Pete Turnham of Auburn by 22 points.

“Juan competed very well,” said diving head coach Doug Shaffer. “We tried a new dive, which needs some work, but this is a perfect opportunity to try new things.”

The Tigers were also able to get all four men in the top six. Junior Matt McClellan was able to get his second top-three finish of the invite with a score of 330.90. McClellan set a new season-high in the prelims, where he posted a 353.35.

Meanwhile, junior Matthew Phillip finished fifth, diving to a new season-best score of 303.65, and freshman Dakota Hurbis ended sixth with a score of 281.65.

Cui kept her undefeated season alive with a win, scoring a season-high 353.90 in the one-meter competition.

“Lizzie was rock-solid on three-meter today posting her highest score of the season,” Shaffer said.

Meanwhile, junior Rileigh Knox set a new personal-best on three-meter, diving to a score of 314.50 and a fourth-place finish. Makayla Robillard took seventh, scoring a 280.30.

“I’m really excited for Rileigh’s performance in the three-meter tonight, but also on the one-meter yesterday,” explained Shaffer. “We are definitely moving in the right direction, and I’m sure this event will encourage and build up her confidence.”

The Tigers finish the competition on platform Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with where we are as a whole and we look forward to one more day of strong competition before we take a break for the holidays,” said Shaffer.
