Beach Volleyball Captures the Team Cup Trophy

EMERSON, Ga.- The LSU beach volleyball team wrapped up its first exhibition of the season, capturing the Team Cup trophy after finishing with an overall record of 42-14 in the Collegiate Beach Bash on Saturday at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Georgia.

“This was a very rewarding result that really validates all the work we’ve been doing this fall,” said associate head coach Russell Brock. “Winning the Team Cup is definitely something that every one of our players can be proud of. They played really hard, and executed well against some tough competition.

In all, four freshmen contributed to help vault LSU to 14 wins in the overall standings.

“(I saw) really good things (from the freshmen),” said Brock. “We wanted to put them in a position to be challenged and by their records, they showed that they are capable and handled it well. We were successful. We were very pleased with the whole team, but the freshmen contributed in a fun and exciting way.”

On court one, Mandi Orellana and freshman Claire Coppola claimed six wins on the day, including victories against Georgia State’s No.1 pair and South Carolina’s No. 2 pair by scores of 21-14, 21-18 and 21-17, 21-14 respectively

At the two spot, Katie Lindelow and Maddie Ligon also garnered another six set victories on the day. The No. 2 pair swept No.3 South Carolina and the No. 2 pair for Georgia State, splitting sets against UNC-Wilmington and the No. 1 pair of Georgia State.

The freshmen combination of Kristen Nuss and Olivia Powers went undefeated on the day, securing eight wins on court three against all four opponents in complete straight set sweeps.

Riley Young and Taylor Bradley tallied six wins on the day with straight set victories. The pair knocked off the No.6 and No. 4 pairs for South Carolina, winning by scores of 21-19, 21-12 and 21-17, 21-17 respectively.

The tandem of Lilly Kessler and Ashley Allmer earned a 7-1 record, knocking off the five and six pairs for Georgia State, including the No. 3 tandem for Spring Hill.

At the six spot, the duo Megan Davenport and Callan Molle also propelled the Tigers to seven wins, sweeping the No.6 and No. 7 pairings of Georgia State and No. 4 Spring Hill, losing only in the second set in a tightly-contested match against Spring Hill by a score of 21-11, 19-22.

The final pairing Emma Hiller and Jeni Clark won two sets with both wins coming against the No.4 team for Spring Hill by scores of 21-13, 28-26.
