Valle Costa and Foster Dominate Opening Day

BATON ROUGE, La. — Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster each earned singles victories and combined for a doubles win on the first day of the LSU Tiger Fall Classic Friday.

No. 16 Valle Costa defeated Princeton’s Sivan Krims 6-2, 6-3, while Foster easily handled Princeton’s Katrine Steffensen 6-1, 6-1.

“It was nice getting a really solid start at the beginning of the match and getting that momentum,” said Foster. “I was able to keep my focus and play within myself today.”

In their doubles match against Rice, Valle Costa and Foster partnered up to defeat Katherine Ip and Wendy Zhang 6-3.

“I loved the way Ryann and Joana competed,” said co-head coach Julia Sell. “I thought they had incredible effort and attitudes and they made adjustments in their matches, which is why they were successful.”

No. 38 Jessica Golovin battled hard and overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third set of a thrilling three-set match, but ultimately fell in the final tiebreaker against Princeton’s Tiffany Chen.

“She hasn’t played in a long time, and I thought her intensity was kind of up and down the whole match,” said Sell.

Skylar Holloway dropped a similarly close, three-set match against Caroline Joyce, and Abby Owens fell to Princeton’s Clare McKee.

LSU will face Tulane in doubles tomorrow at 9 a.m., followed by doubles against Princeton and then singles competition against Rice.
