Shaq-Jones Golf Classic to Benefit Flood Relief
BATON ROUGE – LSU basketball head coach Johnny Jones announced on Tuesday that all proceeds from the 2016 Shaquille O’Neal and Johnny Jones Golf Classic will be donated to the area flood relief efforts.
The golf classic is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16, at Carter Plantation in Springfield. Entry fee for the event, presented by Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, is $1000 per team or $250 per golfer. Hole sponsorships are available for $500.
“There were some questions as to whether or not we should even have the tournament this year because of the flooding,” Jones said. “I talked to Shaquille and we decided not only should we still have the tournament, but we should donate all the proceeds to help the people affected by the flood.”
This is the first year O’Neal and Jones have teamed up to host the event together. Both have held golf tournaments to benefit local projects in the past with this tournament taking the date for O’Neal’s previous golf event that has annually been scheduled the day before the first Southeastern Conference LSU home game.
There will be two tee times with the morning group going off at 8:00 a.m., followed by the afternoon flight at 1:30 p.m.
“We need to fill this thing up,” Jones said. “We have a real opportunity to help some people with the money we raise at the tournament. So if you were thinking about playing, go ahead and get signed up soon.”
There are slots for 64 teams combined in the field and currently the morning flight is nearing capacity. There are, however, openings in the afternoon flight.
