Football Reports to Camp; Practice Starts Thursday

BATON ROUGE – LSU coach Les Miles and his staff welcomed 104 players to campus on Wednesday as the Tigers begin their on-field preparations for the 2016 season.

Wednesday was a day dedicated to academics, meetings, physicals, and getting fitted for equipment in anticipation for the first day of practice, which will take place on Thursday morning. LSU will go through four days of split-squad practices before coming together as a complete unit for the first time next Monday.

“It’s a great time of year and I’m anxious to get started,” Miles said. “We really felt like we had a great summer. We had a lot of players do some really good things in the weight room, including Lewis Neal who set the school record in the clean (391 pounds). I thought Kendell Beckwith and Jamal Adams also put in some special effort this summer.

Leonard Fournette has had a very, very strong summer. He’s been in the weight room, and he’s big, strong and fast. “

Miles reported that several players who missed time last season or during the spring are healthy and ready to practice tomorrow. That list includes wide receiver Travin Dural, center Ethan Pocic, and running back Nick Brossette.

Miles noted that the Tigers will be without 2016 signee Andre Anthony as he fell short of being qualified by the NCAA. Miles said that Anthony is expected to enroll at LSU and will be able to join the team in the spring.

The Tigers go into the 2016 season returning 18 starters to go along with one of the nation’s top five signing classes from a year ago.

“I just want to see it come together,” Miles said of the team. “I think there is speed and talent. I want to see that secondary play like they’re capable of and that defensive front that is going to be the right makeup of speed and strength. I want to see us become the kind of team that we can become. If we do that, I’m going to be very happy and our team is going to be very happy.”

The Tigers closed out the day with a team meeting and then toured the new weight room for the first time.
