Women's Tennis Wins Two Saturday Matches

BATON ROUGE, La. — The No. 37 LSU Women’s Tennis team moved to 5-1 on the year after defeating Northwestern State and Jackson State Saturday at W.T. ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium.

“I thought Northwestern State and Jackson State battled really hard,” head coach Julia Sell said. “They played hard till the end of every match, which was really great because it pushed us. I thought we had a really good week of practice and it was nice to see them implement it in their game.”

The Lady Tigers defeated Northwestern State 7-0 in the first match of the doubleheader.

LSU grabbed the doubles point after Skylar Holloway and Ella Taylor defeated Barbora Kollarova and Natalya Krutova, 6-1. Abby Owens and Skylar Kuykendll also clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one.

No. 28 Joana Vale Costa earned the win on court one with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tatiana Larina. Ella Taylor extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kollarova.

Amanda Atanasson clinched the match for LSU on court six with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Emily Kerr.

No. 74 Abby Owens earned the win on court three 6-3, 6-2. No. 65 Skylar Kuykendall followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two.

Skylar Holloway was pushed to the limit on court five. Holloway took the first set 6-4 but then dropped the second set 5-7. The sophomore came back in the third set tiebreaker to give LSU a sweep.

The Lady Tigers then defeated Jackson State 7-0 in the afternoon match.

LSU got out to a 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point and earning a point on court six on forfeit. Holloway and Taylor defeated Rebekah Adewumi and Karina Ono, 6-1. Atanasson and Madara Straume also def. Akshatha Ananth and Julia Angermann, 6-0.

Holloway made quick work of Adewumi on court five 6-0, 6-1. Taylor then took the win on court four over Ono (6-1, 6-0) to clinch the match for LSU.

Owens improved her record to 5-0 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three over Llona Zuishliuk.

No. 115 Noel Scott earned her first singles match win of the year 6-1, 6-1 on court two.

Kuykendall wrapped things up for the Lady Tigers with a 6-2, 6-1 over Anastasia Zyvahintse.

“These two weeks will be great for us,” coach Sell added. “We have a couple girls who are banged up and we will take this break to get them healthy. This is an ideal time for us to get healthy before we go on the road.”

The LSU women’s tennis team takes two weeks off from competition before traveling to North Carolina to take on Wake Forrest on Feb. 13 and North Carolina State on Feb. 15. LSU doesn’t return home for action until Feb. 22 for a doubleheader against Rice and ULM.
