Volleyball's Smith Earns SEC Weekly Honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After helping the team to its first perfect weekend and being named the most valuable player of the 2015 Days Inn and Suites Lobo Invitational, LSU senior defensive specialist Haley Smith was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week the league announced today, giving LSU a weekly award winner for the first time this season.

This is the first weekly conference award for the Meraux native this year and the second defensive player of the week award she’s won since earning the honor for the first time in November of last season. In all this is the third time Smith has been honored by the league, sharing the award this week with Kentucky’s Kaz Brown, as she was also named the league’s freshman of the week in 2012.

The Tigers swept all opponents last weekend to earn the Lobo Invitational tournament crown, and Smith aided in that effort by averaging 5.27 digs per set in victories over LIU Brooklyn, CSUN and the host New Mexico Lobos in a five-set thriller to close play Saturday night in Albuquerque.

The Chalmette High School product led the Tigers in digs in two of the three matches, earning a season-high 25 in the win over UNM last Saturday, as earlier in the day she corralled 23 in a victory over the Matadors as on the season she has six contests with 20-plus digs.

Out of 43 total reception attempts, Smith only committed one reception error, as she aided in the LSU attack serving up a total of 15 assists with eight in the sweep of LIU Brooklyn in the tournament opener. In 2015 she has four matches having at least six assists.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday night, hosting the Arkansas Razorbacks at 8 p.m. inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The match will be televised live on ESPNU.
