XC Places First, Second at LSU Invitational
BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s cross country team dominated the 2015 LSU Invitational scoring 18 points to defend their home course at Highland Road Park and win the men’s 5k meet, while the women scored 37 points for second place.
Freshman Dajour Braxton placed first with a time of 15 minutes and 20.65 seconds, and junior Christian Johnson crossed the finish line with a time of 15:38.65 for second place. Senior Morgan Schuetz placed third for the Lady Tigers with a time of 18:02.74
The Tiger’s 18 points were enough to defeat New Orleans who finished runner-up with 64 points. In the women’s meet, Southern Mississippi took home first place with 18 points.
“The men’s meet went extremely well,” LSU Head Coach Khadevis Robinson said. “They did what I knew they could do. I am extremely pleased with their performance. The women did fine, but I think they had a little more in them. I’ll take the blame on that because I have worked them hard these past two weeks.”
Braxton continues to lead the Tigers as a freshman coming off his second win of the season. Junior Blair Henderson finished in the top-five with a time of 15:51.65, while sophomore Jack Wilkes crossed the finish line just one second behind Henderson for fifth place.
Schuetz lead the young Lady Tigers in the 5k course as freshmen Hannah Bourque, Hollie Parker, Erika Lewis and sophomore Rebecca Little finished in the top-10. Bourque clocked a time of 18:56.37, while Parker, Lewis and Little finished the course less than 20 minutes.
“We will keep plugging away and working to get better,” Robinson said. “The men won as a team. They worked together, stayed positive and fought. Once we get that mindset in the women, I think we will be pretty good as far as where we are at with the young team we have on both sides.”
Next on the LSU cross country schedule is the Texas A&M Invitational. The Tigers and Lady Tigers will travel to College Station, Texas. Sept. 26. The men and women will race at Watts XC Course.
