Fournette, Pocic Take SEC Weekly Honors

BATON ROUGE – LSU running back Leonard Fournette and center Ethan Pocic each picked up Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors Monday for their performance in the Tigers’ 21-19 win over 25th-ranked Mississippi State on Saturday.

Fournette, a sophomore from New Orleans, earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week recognition after rushing for 159 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries – all career highs. Fournette scored all of LSU’s offensive points on runs of 1, 18 and 26 yards. Pocic, a junior from Lemont, Ill., was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Fournette averaged 5.7 yards a carry as the Tigers racked up 266 rushing yards in the victory. His 28 carries were the most by an LSU player in a season-opener since 1985 when Dalton Hilliard had 31 carries for 148 yards in a win over North Carolina.

It also marked the sixth 100-yard game for Fournette and the third straight dating back to last year. LSU is 5-1 when Fournette reaches the 100-yard mark.

Pocic helped pave the way for Fournette and the Tiger running game by delivering a career-high 16 knockdown blocks. Pocic played all but one snap in the LSU victory as he graded out at a team-best 92 percent.

On 60 offensive snaps, Pocic didn’t allow a quarterback pressure or sack. Pocic was making his 14th career start last week and LSU running backs have gone over the 100-yard mark in nine of those games.
