Cross Country Teams Win Sugar Bowl Festival

METAIRIE, La. – Senior Morgan Schuetz and freshman Dajour Braxton placed first in the men’s and women’s 5k race at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Festival Saturday to help bring home two first-place victories for LSU men’s and women’s cross country teams.

LSU finished with perfect scores of 15 with eight Tigers finishing in the top-10 while the Lady Tigers held all spots in the top-10. New Orleans placed second overall in the men’s race with 55 points and Mississippi Valley finished with 50 points for second in the women’s race.

“Today went well,” Head Coach Khadevis Robinson said. “The men and women were both able to bring home a victory. I think they showed great effort.”

Schuetz and Braxton led the Tigers and Lady Tigers last week at the McNeese State Relays with solid performances. Today Schuetz finished the 5k course with a time of 19 minutes and 40.6 seconds, while Braxton clocked 16.11 at the finished line.

“I was really proud of both the men’s and women’s teams today” Schuetz said. “Today was the first time I’ve ever been part of a perfect scoring team before.”

Junior Christian Johnson placed second with a time of 16:27 while freshman Hayden Kingfisher finished just three seconds behind for third place in the men’s race.

Freshman Erica Lewis also posted another solid performance today with a second-place finish clocking 20:24.6 in the women’s race after teaming with Schuetz last week for first place at the McNeese State Relays. Freshman Hannah Bourgue finished just a second behind Lewis today for third place.

Rounding out the top-10 for the women was Rebecca Little, Jenna Walker, Elizabeth Dunning, Ashley Welborn, Hannah Deworth, Monica Guillot and Hollie Parker. Bryan Stamey finished fourth in the men’s race while Austin Santacruz, Blair Henderson, DC Lipani and Jack Wilkes finished as the top-eight runners.

“It was a good tune up race for our home race coming up this weekend,” Robinson said. “The freshmen were able to get a 5k race in which was good as we start getting ready for our home race this weekend.”

The Tigers will return to Baton Rouge to host the LSU Invitational at Highland Road Park on Sept. 19. The women will begin at 8:05 a.m. CDT, and the men will start shortly behind at 9:15 a.m. as each will compete on the 5k course.
