CCACSA Announces Student-Athletes of the Month

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of September.

Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU’s Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

September’s student-athletes of the month are Simon Freund [Men’s Tennis], Skylar Kuykendall [Women’s Tennis], Frank Herron [Football], Lia Joslin [Swimming and Diving] and Callan Molle [Beach Volleyball]. Haley Smith [Volleyball] was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.

Freund is a general business major Kuykendall is a textiles, apparel and merchandising major, Herron is an interdisciplinary studies major, Joslin is a computer science major and Smith is an accounting major.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Freund competed in all but five competitions for the Tigers during his freshman campaign. The sophomore compiled a 16-12 singles record in his first season and clinched the match point in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.

Kuykendall is a senior women’s tennis player from Jasper, Alabama, and was named to the 2015 All-SEC Second Team. She was also named the 2015 Louisiana Newcomer of the Year on top of being named to the All-Louisiana first team. She finished 24-6 overall and 10-3 in SEC play after holding an 11-match win streak during SEC play.

The sophomore defensive tackle from Memphis, Tennessee, transitioned to defensive tackle from end. He saw action in four games during his redshirt freshman season and registered three tackles, posting two solo stops at Auburn.

Joslin, the freshman freestyler and individual medley competitor from Mandeville, Louisiana, helped Mandeville High School placed second in the 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle relay in 2014. She was the 200-yard individual medley champion and was named the 2014 Metro Outstanding Swimmer along with Megan Loop, another Tiger swimmer.

Junior beach volleyball player Molle hails from Galena, Ohio, moved to the No. 3 position with Cati Leak during her sophomore season before moving to court two after combining for a 19-4 record. She and Leak combing for five wins against ranked opponents and will enter next season with Leak on a five-match win streak.

Smith was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month for her dedication to the community, participating in numerous service events throughout her career. The senior defensive specialist from Meraux, Louisiana, ranks ninth of the career all-time digs list after recently adding 58 during a series in Ohio. She is currently second in the SEC averaging 4.65 digs per set.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.

The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square foot facility comprised of an academic affairs, student affairs and an information technology team, serving more than 530 student-athletes. The purpose is to provide an all-inclusive, student-centered support structure for all student-athletes from matriculation, through graduation and life beyond.
