No. 2 Gymnastics Set for Another Top-5 Matchup

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – One week after knocking off Top 5 Florida in front of a record home crowd, the second-ranked LSU gymnastics team will face its second straight Top 5 opponent when the Tigers compete at No. 5 Alabama on Friday.

The contest will begin at 8 p.m. CT from Alabama’s Coleman Coliseum. The SEC Network will broadcast the meet live, and LSU will provide a free online audio broadcast at www.LSUsports.net/live starting at 7:45 p.m. Mike Smith will call the action.

LSU enters the meet at 9-1 overall and 6-0 versus Southeastern Conference competition, and Alabama is 6-1 overall and 4-1 against the SEC.

“It’s going to be a great environment as it always is,” LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. “Our ladies are motivated to go compete at Alabama because it is a fun atmosphere against a great team.

“We have to get out there, do our gymnastics and control what we can control. Momentum is a powerful thing, and we need to keep it going Friday.”

LSU has earned two of the four best team scores in program history in recent weeks. The Tigers tallied a 198.075, the program’s second-highest score, versus Georgia on Feb. 6 and a 197.950, the fourth-highest score, against Florida last week.

Both teams rank inside the Top 10 in all four events. LSU is No. 2 on floor, No. 3 on beam, No. 4 on bars and No. 6 on vault, while Alabama is No. 3 on floor, No. 5 on vault, No. 6 on beam and No. 8 on bars.

The Tigers are riding high after an outstanding performance last week against Florida. Rheagan Courville, the reigning SEC Co-Gymnast of the Week, won the all-around with a 39.625, while fellow all-arounders Jessie Jordan (39.575) and Ashleigh Gnat (39.550) posted season-high all-around totals to lead LSU.

Lloimincia Hall, the reigning SEC Specialist of the Week, provided a 9.975 on floor against the Gators, and Jessica Savona an Shae Zamardi added career high 9.90 routines on bars.

In all, LSU posted 12 scores of 9.90 or higher and another eight scores of 9.875 last week with Sydney Ewing, Randii Wyrick, Erin Macadaeg, Hall, Jordan, Gnat, Courville, Savona and Zamardi achieving at least one of those score in the Tigers’ victory.
