Women's Tennis Comes Up Short at Wake Forest, 4-3

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. — The LSU women’s tennis team (5-2) won the doubles court and took two courts in singles but fell to Wake Forest 4-3 Friday afternoon.

“A lot of credit goes to Wake Forest for fighting to the end,” head coach Julia Sell said. “We started the match by dominating doubles and winning the five first sets in singles. We had huge leads and multiple match points to win this comfortably on a lot of game points. We are going to use this as motivation and be stronger moving forward.

The team of Skylar Kuykendall and Abby Owens, ranked 60th in the country, led the Lady Tigers off with a 6-1 win on court two. Joana Vale Costa and Noel Scott clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court one.

Kuykendall moved to 6-1 on the year with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-0 win over Wake Forest’s Andrewa Retolaza on court three to go out to a 2-0 lead.

Wake Forest got on board with a win on court four. Samantha Asch defeated Owens 6-2, 4-6, 4-6

Ella Taylor also earned a win to earn a 6-1 record on the year. Taylor defeated Luisa Fernandez 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court five to give LSU a 3-1 lead.

Wake Forest came back and took the remaining three courts to earn the win. Kimmy Guerin defeated Vale Costa 7-5, 4-6, 5-7. Kasey Gardiner pushed Skylar Holloway to the brink on court six. Holloway dropped the match 4-6, 7-5, 5-7.

Scott took the first set 6-2 on court two but dropped the final two sets. Xue Zhang pushed the senior to a third-set tiebreak and won the match 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).

The Lady Tigers return to the courts on Sunday to face North Carolina State on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex.
