Men's Tennis Sweeps Three Saturday Matches

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 42 LSU men’s tennis team (7-1) played two matches against Jackson State and one match against Alcorn State on Saturday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers dominated early and often as they won all three matches with a 7-0 sweep and only lost one set on the day.

Head coach Jeff Brown gave his team credit for staying focused through a long day of competition. LSU continues to gain confidence from their hot start, including four consecutive sweeps.

“I thought the focus was great,” Brown said. “A lot of guys picked up wins. A lot of us gained quite a bit of confidence from the day.”

LSU had rock-solid performances from every player in the lineup. Junior Boris Arias saw his consecutive game streak end at an astounding 35 games in a row without a loss.

Freshman Simon Freund recorded a double bagel in the second match against Jackson State. Freund used lessons learned watching Arias put together his streak to start one of his own, Brown said.

“My main focus was to stay solid throughout the whole match,” Freund said. “I have a bad habit of falling into some bad periods where I just lose focus and I avoided that today.”

With three matches in one day, LSU was able to try some different doubles pairings and insert some new faces into the singles lineup.

Sophomore Eric Perez competed on court six for the Tigers in two matches. Sophomore John Michael Busch teamed up with junior Harrison Kennedy for a court three doubles match.

“Everybody works hard in practice and we have quite a bit of depth,” Brown said. “Today we were able to let the guys get the rewards from working hard and we have to have those guys ready to go.”

Injured junior Andrew Korinek did not make his return on Saturday despite recently increasing his practice time. Brown said he felt some extra rest would do him more good down the line.

The Tigers now look toward a noon match against Rice on Sunday, Feb. 15 where they will look to keep their winning ways alive.
