Three More Tigers Off the Board in MLB Draft

BATON ROUGE, La. – Three LSU players were selected Saturday during the third and final day of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.

Junior right-handed pitcher Joe Broussard was chosen  in the 15th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, senior outfielder Sean McMullen was selected in the 30th round by the Houston Astros, and senior right-handed pitcher Nate Fury was chosen in the 36th round by the Detroit Tigers.

A total of five LSU players were selected in the draft, which began on Thursday and concluded Saturday with the completion of Round 40. Pitcher Aaron Nola was selected in the first round Thursday by Philadelphia, and catcher/infielder Tyler Moore was chosen in the sixth round Friday by the New York  Mets.

Broussard, a native of Gretna, La., worked as LSU’s closer in 2014, posting a 3-2 mark and a 1.05 ERA in 34.1 innings (32 appearances) with eight saves and 37 strikeouts. Broussard, whose saves total was fifth-best in the Southeastern Conference, limited opponents to a .164 batting average.

McMullen, a product of Metairie, La., batted .288 (59-for-205) in 2014 and led the Tigers in doubles (18), runs scored (44) and home runs (seven). He also collected 40 RBI and five steals, and he recorded a .390 on-base percentage. McMullen batted .357 in LSU’s postseason games, and he was named to the SEC All-Tournament team and to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament team.

Fury, a native of Harahan, La., made 26 appearances out of the LSU bullpen in 2014, recording a 3-1 mark and a 2.15 ERA in 29.1 innings with 11 walks and 22 strikeouts. He delivered an excellent performance in his final LSU appearance, firing 4.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts against Houston in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional championship game.

Five LSU signees were also selected on Saturday – left-handed pitcher Jake Latz of Lemont (Ill.) High School (11th round, Toronto); catcher Mike Papierski of Lemont (Ill.) High School (16th round, Toronto); left-handed pitcher Mac Marshall of Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga. (21st round, Houston); right-handed pitcher Jake Godfrey of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill. (21st round, Atlanta); and shortstop Grayson Byrd of King’s Ridge Christian High School in Alpharetta, Ga. (39th round, Atlanta).

LSU signee Bobby Bradley, a first baseman from Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, Miss., was selected in the third round Friday by the Cleveland Indians.
