Lady Tigers Golfers Remain Second in Dallas

BATON ROUGE – No. 18 LSU remained in second place after 36 holes of the SMU/DAC Invitational Saturday at the Dallas Athletic Club, but the Lady Tiger golf team closed the margin between first and second as freshman Carly Ray Goldstein posted her second straight 1-over par 73 to move into a tie for second place.

The final round is scheduled for Sunday to conclude the regular season. It will be an 8:30 a.m. start with LSU playing with first place Baylor and third place North Carolina.

LSU posted a second-round score of 6-over 294, while first-place Baylor posted a 9-over 297 to cut Baylor’s lead to four shots, 595-591, going to Sunday’s final 18 holes. More importantly, for the third straight tournament, the Lady Tigers are setting up the possibility of an individual win after Caroline Nistrup and Madelene Sagstrom tied for the individual title the last two tournaments, only to fall in a playoff.

Goldstein, who had three-birdie son her round, is at 2-over 146 in five-way tie for second at the position with Elizabeth Mallett of North Carolina the individual leader at 3-under 141 after rounds of 72 and 69.

Tied with Goldstein for second is Fabiola Arriaga of UTSA (75-71 – 146); Elin Arvidsson of Texas Tech (72-74 – 146); Hayley Davis of Baylor (72-74 – 146); and, Olivia Eliasson of Kansas State (72-74 – 146).

After Baylor and LSU in the team standings is North Carolina at 21-over 597, seven shots clear of fourth-place UTSA at 28-over 604.

The big move by the LSU team was the rebound by senior Lindsay Gahm, who turned an 80 in the first round to a 3-under 69 on Saturday. Gahm had five birdies in the round including a back nine 32. Gahm dropped her 36-hole total of 5-over 149 and moved from 53rd place to a tie for 11th place after 36 holes.

On the day, LSU also counted a round of 1-over 73 from junior Madelene Sagstrom and a round of +7 79 from Caroline Nistrup. Sagstrom is at 6-over 150 and moved from a tie for 27th to a tie for 14th.
